VDI awards its Science Prize to Dipl. Ing. (FH) Jörn Koonert, Melos Research and Development, for outstanding engineering performance.
Melle / Lingen, 24 Feb. 2010. Top performance and innovations were important topics on the evening of 24 February 2010. The Osnabrück-Emsland regional association of the Association of German Engineers (VDI) had issued invitations to a fireside chat at Kraftwerk Lingen. The high spot of the evening was the presentation of prizes for outstanding performance from the faculty of engineering sciences at the Technical University of Osnabrück, at which one of Melos's employees, Dipl. Ing. (FH) Jörn Koonert, was awarded the first prize.
In his dissertation, Mr Koonert was able to show that for specific TPE-V materials (a subcategory of plastics), deliberately departing from the usual development standards makes it possible for the conflicting properties of strength, elasticity and processibility to be united in a new type of material. "It was an extremely challenging task", says plastics expert Koonert, "and it would not have been possible to implement my findings without the support of Melos and its extremely good infrastructure."
Melos's Research and Development manager Dr. Susanna Lieber is expecting further innovations: "It is never possible to solve a problem using the identical mindset that created it. For this reason the solution-oriented development of elastomeres is an important recipe for success that will undoubtedly keep us busy in the future."
The know-how from this prize-winning research has already been implemented in practice and is contributing to the innovative expansion of Melos's product range.
